This tzatziki shrimp recipe is the best flavor combination of delicious grilled shrimp with a flavorful, creamy herby yogurt sauce. I was inspired after having a similar appetizer at one of our favorite restaurants, The Lobster Bar in Newport, Rhode Island! It was so delicious, I had to make it at home. This is my recreation of that fantastic appetizer – and I can’t wait to go back and have it again.

This recipe comes together in about 30 minutes, so it’s a great appetizer or starter because you can make the tzatziki sauce ahead of time. You can grill or cook the shrimp in a skillet, with a little garlic and butter, and dip it into this tasty garlicky sauce.

What Is Tzatziki Sauce?

Tzatziki is a traditional herb, cucumber, and yogurt dip, that is popular in Greek cuisine. It’s traditionally served along side pita bread or main dishes as a dip. It may have gotten in’s origins from an Indian raita dip.

The sauce is made with Greek yogurt, cucumber, dill, garlic, lemon, red wine vinegar, and black pepper. It goes great with warm or cooled shrimp!

  • Shrimp – uncooked, peeled, and deveined. If you can find fresh shrimp, I highly recommend it (living in New England we tend to be spoiled on that front). If not, store-bought or frozen works great. Just make sure to rinse off any brine before using.
  • Butter – I like to use unsalted butter to reduce the amount of sodium in my cooking.
  • Fresh Garlic
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Greek Yogurt – make sure it’s plain and unsweetened!  You can use a fat free Greek yogurt like this one (it’s our favorite!) or a full fat yogurt too. Make sure you get Greek yogurt and not plain yogurt, the thickness really makes this dish fantastic!
  • Fresh Lemon
  • Fresh Parsley
  • Cucumber

How Do I Make Shrimp with Creamy Yogurt Sauce?

  1. Rinse shrimp under cold water, allow to drain, and set aside.
  2. In a shallow pan or cast iron skillet, heat the butter over low heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until the garlic begins to brown at the outside. Add the salt and pepper.
  3. Turn up the heat to medium heat, and place the shrimp in an even layer at the bottom of the pan. Allow the shrimp to cook for 3 to 4 minutes until pink on one side, then flip the shrimp and cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes on the other side until cooked through. Add the lemon juice and toss well to combine.
  4. Make the tzatziki: in a medium mixing bowl, add all the tzatziki ingredients and stir well to combine.
  5. To plate the shrimp: add the tzatziki sauce to the plate, and place the shrimp on top of the sauce. Dip shrimp in tzatziki and enjoy!
