We got a Big Green Egg grill a few years ago and it’s a total game-changer for summer entertaining. It’s fantastic for all kinds of meats, veggies, and seafood, especially shrimp! No wooden skewers, no problem! You can still have shrimp with a nice char.

Grilled shrimp is one of my favorites on the grill, but if you’re not careful, the shrimp can fall through the grill grates.

This simple grilled shrimp recipe uses three different ways to grill shrimp: in a foil pouch, a cast iron pan or griddle pan insert, or a grill basket so you can grill shrimp on one side, and cook steaks, salmon, or even bake bread on the other half at the same time.

Put Your Cast Iron to Work!

To grill shrimp without skewers, you can cook them up on a cast iron pan, or a cast iron griddle pan. Heat the pan directly on the grates, and add your shrimp, oil, and spices right in the pan.

Since we have a Big Green Egg, we got a plancha grill pan which is great for veggies and stir fries, and a Dutch oven pot which I use to bake bread in while the oven is hot. We also get good use out of our  meat thermometer which we always use to check the internal temperature of meats. You can use a charcoal grill or a gas grill for shrimp.

What’s in This Easy Cast Iron Shrimp Recipe?

Be sure to visit the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Shrimp – uncooked, peeled, and deveined shrimp. Try to get large shrimp or Jumbo shrimp for this recipe.  I would stay away from medium shrimp unless you are using a grill basket. If using frozen shrimp, make sure to thaw before grilling.
  • Sunflower Oil: our go-to oil for everything, it has a neutral mild flavor, great for roasting or grilling! Sunflower is a high oleic oil, so it’s also great to use for high temperatures like grilling.
  • Fresh Garlic
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Fresh Lemon Zest or Lime Juice
  • Fresh Herbs like parsley or cilantro for topping

Once the grill reaches temperature, open the lid, and add the shrimp to a grill basket or grill pan/cast iron skillet, cook the shrimp on the grill pan or basked for 2-3 minutes on one side (smaller shrimp will cook quicker), until opaque pink, the using a large spatula, flip each shrimp, and cook on the other side for an additional 2-3 minutes until cooked through and opaque pink.
