These gluten free Sloppy Joes are the best easy meal, we had them a few nights in a row and even after a few days they still got a 10/10! Sloppy Joes were a childhood favorite for me, but never bothered to make them much as an adult. The store-bought cans of “sauce” are loaded with preservatives and high fructose corn syrup, so I had to make a better version at home!
This traditional sloppy Joe recipe is just as simple to make as using canned sauce! All you have to do is add in a few vegetables as you brown the meat, and mix in a few pantry staple spices and tomatoes to make a delicious sauce. Add to a gluten free bun. Everything is simple and it seriously takes SO good.

What’s In This What Free Sloppy Joes Recipe
See the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and instructions.
- Red Onion, Garlic, Bell Pepper (you can use red peppers or green peppers, both taste great in this recipe!)
- Olive Oil: I like to use fruity olive oil which has a fantastic flavor and deep color.
- Lean Ground Beef – or ground turkey or ground chicken would also work as a substitute.
- Apple Cider Vinegar, which gives this dinner a little extra tang which is really fantastic! I think it gives a nice extra sweetness and depth to these sandwiches… my secret ingredient! You could also use red wine vinegar too.
- Tomato Sauce – canned tomato sauce is the perfect texture for this sauce. You can also use tomato paste mixed with 2x the water.
- Gluten Free Worcestershire sauce – for a tangy flavor
- Brown Sugar – I like the flavor of brown sugar in my Sloppy Joe’s. You could also substitute maple syrup for a natural sweetener.
- Chili Powder: for a really nice flavor in this dip – the chili powder isn’t spicy but will give you a rich and bright flavor.
- Onion Powder: adds a delicious and savory depth of flavor.
- Black Pepper
- Gluten-Free Buns
One Pot Homemade Sloppy Joes For the Win!
This sloppy joes without gluten recipe is the perfect one-pot lunch or easy dinner! I love a good One Pot Meal, especially during these fall months when I don’t want a lot of burners going at once. Cooking everything in one pot is one of my favorite ways to get a meal on the table fast! And one pot makes cleaning up a breeze.
The stove does all the work for you, so you can focus on other kitchen prep while the food cooks. One Pot meals are awesome for breakfast, lunch, or dinner – check out more one pot meals that are ready in no time!
And the sloppy joe filling makes a great freezer meal. Store extra filling in a plastic freezer bag, and thaw and enjoy within 1 month.
