We were given a wonderful tutorial on real charcuterie making from my brother’s girlfriend Emily, who built this absolutely gorgeous charcuterie board using blackberries. She added so many great elements to this board to make it perfect: sweet, crunchy, tangy, tart, creamy, and sour, and it all worked wonderfully.

Blackberries not only provide a beautiful color and sweetness to the board, they are versatile and pair with many different cheeses and meats. This board highlighted purple notes in many kinds of ingredients, anchoring a beautiful color throughout the board.

Why Blackberry Charcuterie Works

  • This charcuterie board with blackberries highlights the fruit’s versatile nature!
  • It’s perfectly sweet and savory!
  • You can add your favorite cheeses or sliced meats to this board for a personal touch.
  • A great board for entertaining – any time of year!
  • This great no-cook recipe can successfully be made by anyone, no skill required.

Ingredients You’ll Need

We usually want a cheese combination of creamy, sharp, and funky – so this board uses a brie (creamy), a cheddar (sharp), and goat cheese (funky) for the perfect flavor and texture balance. We used 2 cheddars – a yellow cheddar and also a merlot cheddar for added flavor. Plus a creamy spreadable berry cheese.

For our meat element, we used both thinly sliced salami and proschiutto which is a smoked Italian ham for the board. Both of these have pink/purple color which pairs nicely with the blackberries.

For fruits, we of course have blackberries, but also added green and red grapes for color. A little dish of honey added a wonderfully sweet touch.

And for the final touches we have both olives and pickles for a nice salty element, as well as a variety of crackers for crunch.

Additions and Substitutions

You can add many different types of berries for this recipe – strawberries or blueberries can give the board a more summery vibe.

Add your favorite cheeses to the mix! If you love a different soft cheese or type of hard cheese, swap in your favorites.

I like serving the board with a variety of crackers, but you can also add crostini, toasts, breads, or pretzels too!

Recipe FAQs

Can I use blackberry jam on a charcuterie board?

Yes, if you can’t find fresh blackberries, adding some blackberry jam or preserves is a great alternative! It adds a sweet element and pop of dark & rich color.

Can I use frozen blackberries?

Fresh works best, but you could always serve a dish of frozen blackberries, heated with a little lemon juice (served like a jam).

What meats pair well with blackberries?

Salty, savory meats create a great contrast to juicy fresh blackberries. Prosciutto, salami, soppressata, and smoked sausages are all excellent choices.

Tips for a Stunning Board

  • Odd numbers look best on a board: grouping items in 3s or 5s adds visual interest.
  • Try to vary the textures across the board – that is why we recommend 3 types of cheeses for a nice variety.
  • Have a nice color balance – along with the dark purple blackberries, it’s nice add other reds and pinks, as well as pops or green and yellows.
  • Leave a little breathing room in the board so it’s not too overcrowded.
