I recently did my first big family camping weekend in Canada, and chose to make these delicious sliders as one of the lunches for the weekend. We needed to keep the ham and cheese cool for a few days (we opted to get a fantastic Canyon cooler!) but these sliders were a big hit.

Start by slicing the Hawaiian rolls, then adding the meat and cheese to the bread. You can store the sliders this way for a few days, and add condiments (mustard and mayo) and lettuce & tomatoes right before serving to keep them fresh. These sliders pair well with bean salad or other camping side dishes like our favorite Mediterranean pasta salad you can make ahead of time.

The base of this recipe is Hawaiian rolls. You can buy a 12-pack and slice them in half to add your meat, cheese, condiments, and toppings into. Each pack of sliders makes 12 sandwiches, so these are great for a crowd.

For the meat and cheese, you have options based on your sandwich favorites! I used ham and cheese as they are my favorites, but see our substitutions below for more options.

For the sandwich condiments, I opted for mayonnaise and yellow mustard, which are classic with ham and cheese. You could opt for a vinegar and oil base, a honey mustard, or a giardia.

And for sandwich toppings, I used lettuce and tomatoes.

Additions and Substitutions

Instead of ham and cheese, you can use turkey and cheddar, roast beef and Swiss cheese, corned beef, or even peanut butter and jelly.

For other sandwich toppings, you could add thinly sliced onions, roasted bell peppers, pickles, banana peppers, or pickled carrots.

If you want something more than mayo or mustard, try other favorite condiments: pesto, hummus, tapenade or aoli.

Recipe FAQs

Can you eat ham and cheese sliders cold?

Yes! These sandwiches are like cold cut lunch sandwiches, and since the sliced ham and cheese are already cooked they are fine to enjoy cold like you would in a traditional sandwich

Can you heat these Hawaiian roll sliders up?

Yes, you can toast the ham and cheese sliders over a fire before enjoying to melt the cheese. If you do so, once you cook them, then you can open them up and add the condiments and toppings to keep them fresh.

Expert Tips

  • Add the sandwich and condiment toppings only just before serving. The condiments may make the sandwiches soggy if you add them too soon.
  • Mix up your meat and cheese varieties for a unique sandwich your group will love.
  • If making this recipe ahead of time, prep only the bread, meat, and cheese ahead of time. The rest is best fresh.
