Ingredients You’ll Need

Be sure to visit the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Bread – I used a thick sliced homemade beer bread for this, but you can use anything you have on hand: Texas toast, sourdough, sandwich bread, or rye!
  • Tomato Sauce – You can use any jarred tomato or spaghetti sauce you have. If you have pizza sauce, you can definitely add that, but regular pasta sauce tastes just as good! This tomato sauce is my favorite – its sweet, flavorful, and fresh!
  • Mozzarella Cheese – I used fresh mozzarella, but you can use any cheese that is your favorite. Sharp cheddar cheese, part skim milk mozzarella, parmesan cheese, Monterey jack or a pizza blend are good options.
  • Butter – I like to use unsalted butter to reduce the amount of sodium in my cooking. It’s a great addition to brush on the bread before toasting!
  • Additional Toppings – see below for our favorites!

Topping Ideas for Pizza Toast

There are so many great options to add to your toast!

  • Meats: pepperoni, pork sausage (or turkey sausage!) crumbled, bacon, or ham.
  • Scrambled eggs for a breakfast vibe.
  • Vegetables: bell peppers, spinach, green onions, olives, or even pineapple are great toppings.
  • Arugula – fresh peppery arugula is a favorite of mine!
  • A drizzle of olive oil if always a nice touch.

How to Make This Recipe

  1. Melt the butter in the microwave or sauce pan. Set aside.
  2. Toast your bread slices (or pop them in the air fryer for a few minutes). Brush them with melted butter after they are toasted .
  3. To each piece of toast, add a tablespoon of tomato sauce, then sprinkle cheese on top, then different toppings you’d like.  Place the assembled pizza toasts on a sheet pan, place on an even layer.
  4. Place the baking sheet  on a center rack in the oven. Broil on low heat for 4-5 minutes, until the mozzarella cheese has melted and begins to brown and bubble. Keep an eye on the toasts, as they can burn quickly under the broiler, so pay attention after 4 minutes until the toasts are ready.
  5. Remove toasts from the oven, and top with fresh greens if desired.  Enjoy!
